Environmental ADHD Theories
Scientists believe that about 50% of ADHD cases are genetic in origin. The remainder of cases are likely environmental in nature. Although more research is necessary to correlate these ADHD theories, the environmental causes of ADHD can be:
- Pregnancy complications — such as oxygen deprivation
- Smoking cigarettes during pregnancy
- Alcohol or drug use during pregnancy
- Exposure to certain toxins — for example lead
- A low birth weight — under about 3.3 pounds
- Low omega-3 fatty acids
Genetic ADHD Theories
Individuals with ADHD appear to run in families and from 10-35% of children with the disease have a relative with ADHD. A parent that has been diagnosed with ADHD has a 50% chance of having a child with ADHD. Researchers also believe that if one twin has ADHD, the likelihood of the other child being afflicted is significant, even if they have been raised apart. Other biologically-based ADHD theories include brain structure and brain chemical function.
Other causes of ADHD
While mostly speculation, there are reports that other causes of ADHD are:
- Dietary concerns — food additives (sugar, caffeine) and allergies
- Watching too much television
- Poor education/schooling
- Poor home situation
